The Director is responsible for a broad set of assignments related to the Knight Campus, which regularly requires the ability to exercise independent judgment and fiduciary responsibility. The Director must possess comprehensive knowledge of the university, its mission, its programs and personnel, and the complex issues that accompany advancing the university's research mission as well as that of the university.
The Director is a member of the President's senior staff with a primary appointment in the Knight Campus and with secondary appointments in other University units as appropriate to the Director's scientific interests. The Director reports directly to the President. The Director routinely interacts with the highest levels of university leadership, including members of the Board of Trustees, members of the faculty Senate, and all administrative and academic leadership positions.
The Director develops and implements scientific vision to attract funding, talent and institutional support to the Knight Campus. The Director administers and leverages resources to create a distinctive profile for the Knight Campus within the national and international scientific community.
The Director is the lead administrator for the campus facilities. The Director will be the hiring authority for the unit. Once completed the campus will house some 30 tenure related faculty and approximately 300 staff and research faculty.
The Director routinely interacts with external partners and government officials. In this role, the Director directly collaborates with central offices such as Communications, Research and Innovation, and Advancement.
• PhD required.
• Demonstrated research portfolio consisting of sponsored awards, and peer reviewed publications/juried exhibits or similar as befits the academic area expertise of the candidate.
• Academic leadership experience in an organization, school, institute or department of significant complexity and nationally recognized research excellence.
• Experience in coordinating and leading interdisciplinary research efforts.
• Demonstrated strong verbal and written communications skills.
• Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrated skill in effectively working with people from diverse backgrounds.
• Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks, work independently, manage projects and initiatives, and solve problems.
• Demonstrated experience working with sensitive and confidential material and topics.
• Research focus in the life or physical sciences.
• Demonstrated philanthropic success in support of higher education, research or non-profit related to life/physical science, intervention science, medical research.
• Experience with large government agencies and foundations supportive of R&D in the life and/or physical sciences.
• Experience in private sector R&D efforts.
• Significant and successful management experience building or rebuilding a new unit or initiative in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment.
• National/International reputation as a visionary scientific leader with a prestigious record of achievement in the field of study as evidenced by an outstanding publication record, successful funding portfolio and other appropriate external indicators.
