The Department of Romance Languages is located in the College of Arts and Sciences, and is a diverse, multicultural, and plurilingual academic unit that researches and instructs in French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish languages and literatures. It is the largest foreign language department at the University of Oregon and frequently intersects with other departments and colleges on campus. The department sponsors and supports numerous activities such as lectures, film festivals, study abroad programs, international conference, and community events.
Our department is composed of first-rate faculty members of different national origins, nationally and internationally distinguished, and a body of talented students pursuing Master’s and Doctoral degrees. There are approximately 47 full-time faculty and 38 graduate students.
The department’s undergraduate program serves approximately 325 majors, teaches approximately 10,383 student credit hours per term and is a major contributor to the University of Oregon’s Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree program.
The Department of Romance Languages at the University of Oregon seeks to build a pool of qualified applicants for possible instructional positions in French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish (lower and upper division language and culture classes and upper division
literature and linguistics classes). Positions are limited duration appointments potentially renewable for up to a total of three years. In limited circumstances, there is the possibility of renewal beyond three years based on programmatic need, funding and performance. Screening of applications will take place as positions become available and continue until positions are filled. Contract offer is contingent upon demonstration of professional–level proficiency (ACTFL Superior, or equivalent) in both English and the target language.
Potential courses may include first- and second-year language courses (FR/ITAL/PORT/SPAN 101, 102, 103; 201, 202, 203); third-year language and culture courses ( FR/ITAL/PORT/SPAN 301, 303, 305) and, with appropriate credentials, introductory literature or linguistics courses such as FR 317 or SPAN 322, or advanced undergraduate seminars such as SPAN 420 or SPAN 424. May also include supervision of multi-section language courses.
• Master’s degree in the relevant Romance language or a related field.
• PhD for those teaching upper-division literature, culture and linguistics courses (number 315 and above).
• Professional-level proficiency (ACTFL Superior, or equivalent) in both English and the target language.
• Successful college-level teaching experience; experience in curriculum development; proficiency assessment; heritage language teaching; service learning.
