The Office of the Dean of Students is committed to advancing student learning that builds community. The programs reporting to the Associate Vice President and Dean of Students work with Student Life staff, student groups, and other members of the university community in the development of curricular and co-curricular opportunities that assure the integration of academic and student life.
The Veterans Program Specialist will develop and coordinate expanded programs to support the academic goals of student veterans and their families at the University of Oregon by providing them with transitional, social, and educational support.
The Veterans Program Specialist will coordinate essential support services and serve as an advocate for student veterans. They will perform a variety of administrative functions and will work collaboratively with administrators, faculty, and students in promoting the student academic and personal achievement within a student-centered environment. Additionally, this individual must coordinate a comprehensive and collaborative campus-wide effort to maximize the recruitment, retention, and graduation of veterans, military personnel and their families.
This position reports to the Coordinator of Nontraditional and Veteran Student Engagement and Success in the Office of the Dean of Students.
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education;
• Associate degree from an accredited institution of higher education plus two years or more of experience working with students or clients at a college, university, non-profit, or governmental service organization.
• Two years of demonstrated experience working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, in support of an inclusive and welcoming environment.
• One year demonstrated experience coordinating and evaluating programs and events.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to facilitate, mediate, advise, advocate and mentor.
• Strong organizational and time management skills including the ability to demonstrate initiative, set priorities, and achieve department goals with excellent attention to detail.
• Demonstrated computer skills including proficiency with word processing, email, spreadsheets, and presentation software.
• Two years of professional experience with working with military veterans or similar population.
• Demonstrated ability to mentor and supervise student employees.
