Department Summary
The Office of the Dean of Students is committed to advancing student learning that builds community. The programs reporting to the Associate Vice President and Dean of Students work with Student Life staff, student groups, and other members of the university community in the development of curricular and co-curricular opportunities that assure the integration of academic and student life.

Position Summary
The Coordinator of Substance Abuse Prevention is a position in the Office of the Dean of Students. The University is committed to provide a comprehensive, evidence-based substance abuse prevention program that empowers students to make healthy choices, reduces their risks and the negative consequences associated with alcohol and other drugs, increases their protective factors and behaviors associated with high-risk drinking, and increases their understanding of the connection between substance abuse and future success. The Coordinator of Substance Abuse Prevention leads the campus efforts to apply evidence-based prevention programs and practices and a comprehensive, multifaceted approach that targets individuals (including at-risk, or alcohol dependent drinkers), the student population as a whole, and the university and surrounding community. The Coordinator collaborates with students along with campus and community partners to design, enhance, sustain and measure the effectiveness of student substance abuse prevention programs for the campus.

Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree.
• Minimum of two years direct professional or graduate-level experience in substance abuse prevention within an institution of higher education.
• Demonstrated ability in creating and implementing alcohol and other drug prevention programs, presentations, and intervention services for young adults that includes knowledge of health promotion theory, harm reduction, behavior change, population-based theories and models, and expertise using environmental management strategies and the ecological model.

Professional Competencies
• Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrated teaching and training skills.
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to build and sustain collaborative relationships with students and campus and community partners.
• Demonstrated organizational and time management skills, including setting priorities and achieving program and department goals, and performing multiple work assignments simultaneously with acute attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s degree in public health, prevention science, college student personnel, student affairs administration, higher education administration, counseling or related field from an accredited institution.
• Demonstrated ability in building and sustaining successful coalitions and committees that focus on substance abuse prevention efforts.
• Demonstrated ability to design health promotion programs that meet the needs of a multicultural, college student population.
• Experience in grant writing and/or executing grant-funded initiatives.
• Experience supervising student staff.
