The College of Design Office of External Relations and Communications communicates to a broad range of internal and external audiences about the excellence and social impact of the academic programs and people in the College of Design. The team provides media relations, digital communications, graphic design, writing, editing, marketing, and brand services to College of Design departments and programs and collaborates with university partners to improve the effectiveness of communications, marketing, and outreach utilizing an integrated digital, print, and social media approach.
As a key member of the College of Design communications team, the Public Information Representative 1 identifies, writes, edits, and publishes content to promote public awareness of the College of Design, its departments and programs, in alignment with the College's strategic goals.
The Public Information Representative 1 is the primary writer for the College of Design and writes, edits, and produces publications, news stories, profiles and other content for web, digital, and print outlets to explain and promote College of Design programs and activities to internal and external audiences. The Public Information Representative 1 ensures correct and effective format, timing, and distribution of releases. The person in this position may also produce and edit photographs, video, or audio materials and operate related equipment as well as maintain the library of images, graphics, and publications for further use. This position may oversee student employee work.
The Public Information Representative 1 gathers and produces information about College of Design academic programs, events, and news. The person in this position communicates with and interviews faculty, staff, students, administrators, architects, artists, designers, and other academic partners and industry professionals to collect accurate information for publicity and promotion. The Public Information Representative 1 may attend public meetings or events to obtain information, photographs, or videos.
The Public Information Representative 1 creates and maintains a robust media list of relevant trades, talks with media contacts to keep current with their interests, actively pitches stories, and monitors media coverage. This position serves as a key contact for placement of the College's news and features with media regionally, statewide, and in professional trade publications and relevant higher education outlets. This position will work with team and university partners to maximize media exposure for the College of Design. The person in this role may serve as a spokesperson at press conferences or public meetings or respond to written or telephone inquiries about college activities.
This position is part of a team of communications professionals that implements strategic messages and plans and executes content for key audiences for the College of Design. The team is responsible for managing and overseeing the College of Design's marketing, media relations, social media, constituency data, web analytics, web content, publications, and graphic design.
This position requires flexible hours for occasional weekend and evening assignments.
• Three years experience in gathering information, writing/producing materials, presenting information to the public, and public relations. One year of this experience must have included responsibility for press releases and interaction with the news media.
• A bachelor's degree in journalism, communication, or closely related field may substitute for up to two years of the general experience.
• High attention to detail for accuracy in typing, spelling and composition.
• Demonstrated ability to assimilate complicated information and write for variety of audiences, media, and contexts.
• Experience with digital communications, including website, social media, photo editing, and content management systems.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently, set appropriate work priorities, and require minimal supervision over regular work activities.
• Demonstrated ability to work well in a team environment.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and tight deadlines.
• Commitment to and experience with promoting and enhancing diversity and equity.

• Ability to represent the university in a consistently courteous, knowledgeable, and professional manner and the ability to effectively deliver difficult messages.
• Five years or equivalent experience in communications, public relations, public affairs, marketing, advertising, journalism, or a closely related field.
• A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
• Advanced professional writing and editing experience.
• Familiarity with art, architecture, planning or design disciplines or experience with reporting and writing arts and design stories.
• Experience in a higher education setting.
