Student Government Engagement and Success (“SGES”) coordinates the operations, support and continuity for the Associated Students of the University of Oregon (“ASUO”) Student Government Association. ASUO serves as the dive in point for student leadership and engagement at UO and in the greater community. The Assistant Director, Finance & Business Operations is primarily responsible for leading and directing the operations of the SGES financial and administrative service units. The Assistant Director oversees the accounting systems and compliance activities related to all aspects of the Incidental Fund (“I-Fund”), which currently totals more than $16 million. In addition, this position advises I-Fund budget authorities, coordinates the I-Fund budget process, and manages, reviews and provides recommendations on the SGES budget and operational performance. The Assistant Director takes initiative to conduct regular financial and internal analysis to strengthen services, policies and procedures and to assure integration with SGES mission and vision.
Success in this role is tied to:
• Budgeting skills – including analytical and financial modeling skills with ability to strategize, prioritize and multi-task. Knowledge and experience with budget processes, timelines, formats, and summarizing important budget information. Ability to offer constructive and relevant input to student leaders as they manage a budget process.
• Public administration skills – including public policy, organizational leadership, project management, process improvements, critical thinking and listening.
• Supervision skills - Experience supervising others, including hiring, training and evaluating staff, and managing employee work schedules and timesheets. Ability to work effectively with professional and student employees to guide and support their work and development.
This position reports to the SGES Director and serves as a member of the SGES Management Team. The Assistant Director directly supervises two professional staff; the Accounting Technician and the Office Manager; and a financial support team of 8-15 students.
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
• Three years of professional accounting, auditing and/or budget and financial management experience.
• Three years’ supervision experience, including hiring, training and evaluating staff, and managing employee work schedules and timesheets.
• Demonstrated experience with and/or commitment to working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, in support of an inclusive and welcoming environment.
• Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills; customer service experience.
• Demonstrated skill and experience in leadership and management of financial, human resources, information systems, management strategies, or business operations.
• Strong analytical and financial modeling skills with proven ability to strategize, prioritize and multi-task. Familiarity with accounting procedures (accounts payable, accounts receivable, etc.).
• Intermediate level Microsoft Excel skills, including the ability to work with multiple worksheets, filter data, use integrated functions, and manipulate databases.
• Track record of improving organizational performance, preferably in a college/university setting.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with emphasis in accounting, public administration, finance, business administration, or closely related field from an accredited institution.
• Experience working within a board governance model.
• Experience working with an enterprise accounting and reporting system (e.g. Banner).
