The University of Oregon Greenhouse Facility comprises more than 6,000 square feet of greenhouse space and a one-acre field to support research and teaching activities. The Greenhouse Facility serves as a core facility to support the research and teaching missions of faculty and students in multiple academic departments and institutes across the university, as well as multiple universities throughout the country. The facility is staffed by a part-time greenhouse manager and by student workers.
The Greenhouse Manager has complete responsibility for the day-to-day management and operation of the greenhouse facilities consisting of approximately 6,000 square feet of greenhouses, a one acre field which is currently used for a research cornfield, and associated equipment that support a range of research and teaching activities. The Greenhouse Manager works closely with faculty and staff to oversee maintenance of the greenhouse facility and care of plants used for research and teaching. Approximately 80% of the plants maintained in the greenhouses are used for research by UO faculty. As such, the Greenhouse Manager plays a critical role in supporting UO research, and works closely with faculty Principle Investigators to ensure that these valuable research materials are properly cared for.
Duties will include the hiring, training, and supervision of student workers in plant care, greenhouse protocols, and environmental health and safety procedures; establishing protocols for plant care; ensuring proper planting, watering, fertilization, insect and disease control, establishment and monitoring of plant growth environments; developing and overseeing integrated pest management systems; serving as a resource for information on plant care, pesticide use, cultural requirements of diverse plant species, and purchase of supplies and equipment; managing updates to facilities and equipment; maintaining mechanical and environmental control equipment; ensuring compliance with safety and legal requirements; maintaining financial records relating to greenhouse use and supplies; and outreach both within and outside the UO to increase the pool of greenhouse users.
• BS or BA degree in horticulture, plant biology or related field preferred, but individuals with an exceptional level of relevant experience will be considered without a degree.
• Substantial experience managing a greenhouse or proven expertise in horticulture, soil and growth media preparation, integrated pest management, plant nutrition, supervising staff, and development and enforcement of protocols and procedures.
This position will require a valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain UO Drivers Certification.
Must be willing to work occasionally during weekends, holidays, and periods of adverse weather to accommodate emergency needs.
Must be able to perform strenuous manual labor, including climbing ladders and frequent lifting/carrying loads up to 40 lbs. Must be comfortable using hand and power tools.

• Ability to work independently, to prioritize tasks, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Ability to anticipate, diagnose, prioritize, and remedy problems.
• Must be able to work well with multiple constituents, including faculty, students, student staff, vendors and administrative and Facilities Services staff at the UO.
• Knowledge of pest management principles and practices, pesticide and fertilizer safety and associated legal requirements. Must either possess a valid pesticide license or acquire one within three months after hire. Must possess an Oregon Driver’s License, or have the ability to obtain one shortly after hire.
