The Hettiaratchi Lab is a collaborative, highly interdisciplinary research group that combines expertise in chemical engineering, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, and bioengineering to develop injectable biomaterials for protein delivery to injured tissues in the body. Members of the Hettiaratchi Lab come from a variety of basic science and engineering backgrounds. Ongoing projects in the lab include the synthesis of new hydrogels for protein delivery, the development and investigation of new protein-material interactions, and evaluating the performance of these materials in small animal models. Major areas of focus include immunomodulation and repair and regeneration of bone, muscle, and nerves. The Hettiaratchi Lab is dedicated to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM and welcomes lab members from a variety of backgrounds. More information can be found at hettiaratchi-lab.com.
The postdoc will be responsible for conducting research and technical activities related to ongoing projects in the Hettiaratchi Lab involving the design, fabrication, and implementation of hydrogel biomaterials for protein delivery. The postdoc will also give poster and oral presentations, write manuscripts, and assist Dr. Hettiaratchi in mentoring graduate and undergraduate students. The postdoc will be provided with ample opportunities to participate in dynamic cross-disciplinary collaborations, to improve their technical and communication skills, and for professional development to achieve their long-term career goals.
• Ph.D. in bioengineering, biomaterials, or related science or engineering field.
• Wet lab experience in bioengineering or related field in a university setting.
• Experience with bacteria, yeast, and/or mammalian cell culture.
• Experience fabricating and/or using biomaterials (e.g. hydrogels, nanoparticles, etc.).
• Demonstrated wet lab skills.
• Demonstrated strong written and oral communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a research team.
• Demonstrated understanding of polymer chemistry and/or biotransport principles.
• Animal surgical experience.
• Experience with grant writing.
• Experience with biological imaging equipment and facilities.
• Experience mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.
