• Work sample: A video recording of ASL to English and English to ASL interpreting. Submissions can be two separate videos or combined into one. There should be at least 5 minutes of each sample to allow the interpreter coordinator sufficient time to review skills before hiring. Work samples provide necessary information to your skillset in relation to the university environment. Upload your video recording(s) to a video hosting website as unlisted and provide the link within the cover letter for review.
Department Summary
Undergraduate Education and Student Success (UESS) promotes academic excellence, universal access, engagement and achievement for the student scholar. UESS programs focus on the educational trajectory of the student by providing opportunities and services essential for progress toward scholastic objectives and intellectual development. UESS departments and programs serve the entire population of UO undergraduate students and partner closely with other campus units to support student success and engagement.
The Accessible Education Center (AEC) facilitates and supports access and inclusion for students with disabilities. The AEC coordinates services, determines student accommodations, provides advocacy and collaborates with students, faculty, staff, and the community to create and sustain accessible physical, curricular and informational environments.
Position Summary
Temporary (Hourly) Sign Language Interpreters are responsible for providing sign language interpreting/transliterating services to UO faculty/staff, students, and visitors. Schedules and assignments will be determined by the Sign Language Interpreter and Transcription Coordinator.
The Temporary Sign Language Interpreter position is based as needed, hourly, and reports to the Sign Language Interpreting and Transcription Coordinator.
Temporary Sign Language Interpreters must exhibit professionalism and collegiality in a team environment, and the ability to create a welcoming, inclusive, accessible and professional atmosphere on campus. This person must exhibit cultural humility and agility, with the ability and commitment to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Minimum Requirements
• One year of experience interpreting
• Successful completion of a formal two- or four-year interpreter training program or equivalent
• Fluent ASL and English language skills and ability to accurately interpret and convey higher-level educational content and concepts
• Hold a Provisionary, Generalist, or Supervisory License from the Oregon State Board of Sign Language Interpreters.
Professional Competencies
• Demonstrated ability to utilize a wide range of sign language systems (i.e. ASL, PSE, ProTactile ASL)
• Ability to work effectively with students, staff, and faculty from diverse backgrounds, including international students, students with disabilities, students of color, and other underrepresented groups in university settings
• Adherence to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct (CPC)
• Ability to work effectively in a diverse team environment and create effective relationships for problem-solving and positive interactions
• Ability to juggle competing priorities and work under tight timelines
• Proficiency with MS Office Suite (or similar); ability to produce professional correspondence and documents
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience interpreting in a postsecondary setting
• Certification from the National Association of the Deaf (NAD), Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), or equivalent
• Satisfactory completion of the TypeWell Transcriber Training program OR a completed application for the Basic Skills Course indicating qualification to take the training
• Working knowledge of universal design principles, disability compliance mandates, and related best practices
• Bachelor's Degree
• Familiarity with the use of technology and assistive equipment to facilitate communication access
• Experience with creating and editing captions
• Ability to work across a broad range of issues related to diversity and creating an inclusive community
