The primary mission of the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships at the University of Oregon is to help students achieve their educational goals by reducing financial barriers to attend the University of Oregon. This mission is carried out in an environment that places high priority on student-centered service as well as meeting University enrollment goals. We provide information about financial assistance and scholarships to a diverse group of students and families, determine financial aid eligibility and award program funds to applicants in accordance with all applicable policies and rules, while advocating for students regarding financial aid issues at the institutional, State, and Federal levels.
The Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships is recruiting for three Financial Aid Counselors. Two of the Counselors will be focused on financial aid advising, outreach, and administrative functions. The third will specialize in scholarships, performing departmental scholarship oversight and operations, outside scholarship processing, as well as student advising and outreach. All positions require the ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse background and cultures.
All three positions will require counselors to be in the office from 8am-5pm Monday-Friday. Additional hours may be necessary to accommodate university outreach, attendance at training, workshops, and conferences, as well as during peak times within the office. Due to Covid-19, counselors will rotate between working from the office and from home to allow for increased physical distancing. All counselors will be expected to work part time from the office. When it is safe to have all staff back in the office, all staff will work full time at the office.
Financial Aid Counselor (2 positions)
Reporting to the Associate Director for Advising, this position is responsible for a variety of Financial Aid advising, outreach, and administrative functions. This position requires the ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and other clients from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. The responsibilities of this position require the incumbent to have the ability to learn quickly and work effectively in a fast-paced, high volume office. Due to the sensitive nature of financial aid, the incumbent must have the demonstrated ability to be assertive, while exercising tact and empathy in communicating information about processes and outcomes. This position requires the ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
Financial Aid Counselor – Scholarship Payment Coordinator (1 position)
This position reports to the Associate Director for Scholarships and is responsible for a variety of Financial Aid and Scholarships administrative functions. In doing so, the incumbent exercises independent, professional judgment beyond prescribed policies and procedures to carry out the university's mission and policy to recruit and retain students at this university. The decisions made by the incumbent commit this office to a specific course of action, carry fiduciary responsibility and accountability for managing the financial aid program expenditures, and determine whether or not a student receives financial assistance to attend or continue attending the university. This position provides input to the office management team that is then used in designing and implementing unit policy.
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of skills, experience, and education
• One year of experience in student financial aid, student affairs, counseling, or related fields
• Experience providing quality customer service
• Must not be in default on title IV loans
• Demonstrated understanding of issues facing diverse groups (e.g. low-socioeconomic, first generation, underrepresented students of color, non-traditional, and under-prepared individuals)
• Demonstrated strong written and oral communication skills.
• Demonstrated high-level organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and multi-task effectively in a fast-paced, detail oriented, and time sensitive environment.
• Diligently attends to details and completes detail-oriented tasks with a high degree of accuracy
• Recognizes situations that warrant initiative and moves forward without hesitation to resolve issues, problems, or situations.
• Ability to anticipate next steps and execute independently.
• Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office Suite (or similar). Ability to produce professional correspondence, documents, data reports, and presentations.
• Demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external constituencies.
• Master's degree
• Work experience in higher education and student financial aid
