Department Summary
The division of University Communications is charged with telling the University of Oregon’s stories to a broad range of audiences and positioning the university to succeed and thrive. The division utilizes and manages a comprehensive suite of communications tools, including public relations, branding, advertising, licensing, digital media, and more for the benefit of the university. The division's units include the Office of the Provost communications team, which oversees communications for the Division of Global Engagement; Public Affairs Communications, which manages media relations; digital communications; internal communications; emergency communications; and counsel to university constituencies, including the Office of the President.

Communications provides design and editorial services to produce major informational and recruiting publications for the University of Oregon (UO). It also provides creative services for selected offices across campus, including the Office of Enrollment Management, the UO Alumni Association, UO Foundation, the schools and colleges, and others. Professional writers, editors, and designers work with departmental clients to ensure that UO marketing communications materials are accurate, well written, well designed, conform to the UO style guidelines and communication standards, are targeted to appropriate audiences, and are clearly the product of a distinguished institution of higher education.

Position Summary
Reporting to the Provost’s Communications Director, the Assistant Director of Communications for the Division of Global Engagement (DGE) will be responsible for all online, digital, and written content within the division. This work will include developing and participating in communications strategy, overseeing design and DGE-related websites, and working closely with DGE leadership to create and manage all of the division’s communications content. The Assistant Director works under the guidance of the Provost’s Communications Director to determine strategies that will best communicate the mission, vision, and values of DGE, its dean and vice provost, the DGE leadership team, and the staff.

The Assistant Director oversees content creation, makes decisions in conjunction with communications staff about how best to display such content, and supervises communications staff within DGE, advising, evaluating, and coaching on how best to serve the division and the university. Also, the Assistant Director uses data, analytics, and other information services to monitor, track, and gauge how communications are having an impact on DGE’s stakeholders – students studying abroad, faculty who participate in study abroad programs, and study abroad partner organizations of UO.

Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or a closely related field; OR an equivalent combination of skills and experience
• Two years of experience working with a variety of communications channels, including writing web content, creating and updating web pages, and developing strategic communications priorities

Professional Competencies
• Expert writing and communications skills
• Knowledge of web analytics tools, preferably Google Analytics and Google Webmaster tools
• Expert editing skills using Drupal and/or Wordpress; and thorough knowledge of AP and Chicago style
• Demonstrated knowledge of Drupal
• Expert knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite
• Demonstrated ability to manage people, work effectively with a wide variety of people across multiple units and agencies to develop strategies to achieve operating goals
• Commitment to and experience with promoting and enhancing diversity and equity
• Ability to communicate and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience managing and monitoring social media in higher education setting using industry standard monitoring tools, such as Hootsuite
• Experience applying communications skills in higher education
