The Director, Communications contributes a unique interpretation and/or analysis as the primary communications contact for the men’s basketball program within the University of Oregon Athletic Department. This position will coordinate communications efforts for the Oregon men’s basketball program, including press conferences, post-practice, and post-game activities. The Director serves as the primary contact for all interview and media requests with the Oregon men’s basketball head coach, assistant coaches, and players, as well as for all team-related information. The position will provide interpretations, insights, and analysis to fans and international media outlets via the GoDucks.com website, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and other multimedia outlets.
The Director will act as the primary liaison between the athletics department and all media, and will regularly come into contact with local media (Pacific Northwest) and national media who cover men’s basketball. The position will be the primary point of contact with televising broadcast networks, coaching staffs, student-athletes, donors, fans, communication colleagues from competing universities, athletic department personnel, and other key stakeholders of Oregon Athletics.
This position reports to Assistant Athletic Director, Communications, and will independently make decisions regarding the handling of information available to the media.
This position is responsible for promoting the philosophy and objectives of the intercollegiate athletics program, including adherence to all department policies and procedures, as well as the rules and regulations of the university, Pac-12 Conference, and the NCAA.
• Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, or related field
• Three years of experience working in a collegiate athletics or professional sports communications office
• Demonstrated understanding of all forms of new/digital media and proven writing/editing skills
• Excellent communications skills; demonstrated ability to be creative and innovative
• Competency with Abode InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, and Statcrew/NCAA Live Stats
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines
• Exceptional ability to work in a networked way, emphasizing collaboration in a complex environment
• Ability to perform detail-oriented work accurately and to communicate effectively with a diverse population
• Clear understanding of NCAA rules and compliance
• Experience as the primary communications/media relations contact for a Power 5 men’s basketball program or an NBA team
• Experience overseeing social media efforts for a basketball team at the intercollegiate or professional level
• Candidates with experience serving the needs of diverse populations
• NCAA Championships experience
• Thorough knowledge of all sports UO sponsors, including understanding of the role of local and national media in assisting efforts in promoting our nationally recognized teams
