About Special Collections and University Archives:
Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA) is the primary repository for the university’s archives, rare books, historic photographs, and one of the largest historical manuscript collections in the Pacific Northwest. As the largest historical repository in the state, SCUA provides extensive public access to its collections and is thus a critically important source of Oregon and Pacific Northwest historical materials to be used for research, publication, and instruction.

Position Summary

The University of Oregon Libraries in beautiful Eugene, Oregon, seeks an experienced professional with a passion for public engagement and outreach to serve as its next Corrigan Solari University Archivist and Historian.

Reporting to the Director of Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA), the Corrigan Solari University Archivist and Historian is the primary steward of the UO's institutional history, and works to collect, preserve, and tell the story of the institution's legacy and impacts. University Archives materials are heavily utilized by campus and the public, and have contributed to both the architecture and the museum of the famed Hayward track and field complex in Eugene; as well as to exhibits and publications such as The Architecture of the University of Oregon; Leadership and Legacy: Athletics and the University of Oregon; and Untold Stories: the Hidden History of the University of Oregon, which highlights the stories and experiences of underrepresented communities.

The Archivist and Historian will arrive at an exciting time for the UO and its Libraries. As the University of Oregon continues its growth trajectory, with the recent addition of a rapidly growing data science major, the development of the Phil and Penny Knight Center for Accelerating Scientific Impact, and the bold acquisition of a new campus in Oregon's major population center of Portland; University Archives not only tells the story of UO's past, but is actively documenting the present and creating the record of its future. Through professional curation, collection management, preservation, and solicitation of the permanent record of the University and papers of its faculty and student organizations, spanning all manner of traditional and emerging formats, the incumbent ensures a representative and inclusive institutional history. The Libraries’ Special Collections and Archives have grown and modernized over the recent years, expanding capacity to handle materials of various formats, increasing access to significant collections, and attracting higher use than ever before. The next Archivist and Historian will continue to move us forward, building for the demands and opportunities of tomorrow.

The Archivist and Historian oversees and coordinates the department’s multifaceted instruction program, providing consistent and professional information to faculty, staff, researchers, and the public, and contributing to the University's educational mission while ensuring that students and scholars gain exposure to and practice with critical primary source inquiry. The successful candidate will also supervise and train student workers; coordinate with the Director of SCUA on policy development; collaborate with a campus records management office to distinguish temporary records and ensure compliance with public records retention policies; lead the development of research and reference services regarding UO history; and will function as point person for instruction activities led by UO faculty while employing SCUA collections. Minimum Requirements

Minimum Qualifications for Associate Librarian Rank:
• Master’s degree in Library/Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited institution, OR a Master’s degree in Archival Administration.
• Six years of post-degree progressive leadership experience focused on institutional records in a special collections or university archives.

Minimum Qualifications for Senior Librarian Rank:
• Master’s degree in Library/Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited institution, OR a Master’s degree in Archival Administration.
• Twelve years of post-degree progressive leadership experience focused on institutional records in a special collections or university archives.

Professional Competencies

• Ability to provide instruction in Archival theories and operations.
• Exceptional, effective communication skills.
• Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with faculty and staff in a variety of disciplines.
• Ability to prioritize work and meet multiple deadlines.
• Demonstrated analytical and organizational skills.
• Ability to support and enhance a diverse learning and working environment.
• Thorough knowledge and experience in the practices and principles of archival management.

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced subject degree in humanities, social science, or related field.
• Demonstrated experience with administering analog and digital institutional records.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in current legal issues affecting access to permanent institutional records.
• Experience with a robust records management program.
• Experience managing project work.
• Experience with outreach and public relations.
• Donor relations experience.
• Strong interest in student and faculty engagement.
• Experience providing instruction in the use of, or information about, special collections and university archives resources in both analog and digital formats.
• A strong commitment to effective public service.
• A record of active participation in professional associations and initiatives at the state and national level.
