Department Summary

The Division of Undergraduate Education and Student Success (UESS) promotes academic excellence, universal access, engagement, and achievement for the student scholar. UESS programs focus on the educational trajectory of the student by providing opportunities and services essential for progress toward scholastic objectives and intellectual development. UESS departments and programs serve the entire population of UO undergraduate students and partner closely with other campus units to support student success and engagement.

At the Tutoring and Academic Engagement Center (TAEC) students find resources and services to enhance their learning and academic performance through tutoring, classes and workshops, individual learning consultations, graduate school test prep, and supplemental instruction. These resources are instrumental in helping students fill in critical subject and skill gaps, strengthen their academic performance, and help them make solid progress toward achieving their educational goals.

Position Summary

The Learning Specialist (First-Year Transition) provides direct student support for first-year students and coordinates program services to help improve their learning and enhance their academic success. This position brings expertise and leadership around general academic and learning support and will guide the growth of these services within the TAEC and across campus.

The Learning Specialist will play a critical role in enhancing the academic success of first-year students by providing individual consultation, instruction, and coordination of programming. Key responsibilities include coordinating and supporting the Undergraduate Support Program. This position offers wrap-around support for conditionally admitted first-year students. The Learning Specialist will also support TAEC operations benefiting first-year students such as developing and expanding integrated academic support services focused on narrowing resource gaps and building academic skills for success. This position is responsible for maintaining student contact records and reporting data on program use and effectiveness.

The Learning Specialist will participate in staff meetings, evaluate TAEC departmental initiatives, and assist with CRLA-aligned peer educator training. This position may teach additional credit course(s) based on the needs of the department.

The Learning Specialist must be culturally competent and able to work with first-generation, low-income, underrepresented, international, and transfer students. The position requires skill in addressing the needs of all students, from high performing to academically vulnerable. The Learning Specialist must also demonstrate respect for all individuals, welcome diversity among students and colleagues, and actively work toward an inclusive workplace.

Minimum Requirements

• Master's degree, or equivalent combination of education, skills, and experience.
• One year of experience teaching in group or individual settings.
• One year of experience implementing academic support and strategies to enhance student learning.

Professional Competencies

• Excellent communication skills.
• Knowledge of student learning and teaching theory and research, with awareness of evidence-based strategies.
• Commitment to, experience with, and ability to work effectively with people from a variety of diverse backgrounds and cultures in support of a welcoming and inclusive environment.
• Ability to work individually and collaboratively in a team setting.
• Ability to establish priorities, maintain schedules, and manage time effectively.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience teaching or providing learning support at the university level.
• Experience coordinating programs, services, or events.
