University Communications drives the University of Oregon’s strategic goals through the development and implementation of comprehensive communications and marketing programs. The division manages media relations, digital communications, social media, creative design, writing, editing, strategic communications, licensing, and marketing strategy. It collaborates with departments across campus to tell the UO’s key stories, enhance its reputation, and support initiatives that showcase academic and research excellence while promoting student success.

Position Summary

As a Staff Announcer and Operations Assistant at KWAX, you will be responsible for hosting live music programming from the KWAX air studio for 4-6 hours daily. You will read live underwriting messages clearly and professionally during broadcasts, produce promotional messages in the production studio, and participate in on-air fundraising drives to encourage listener support and contributions. Additionally, you will answer and respond to listener inquiries, providing excellent customer service. You will also produce programming for weekends and holidays as needed, ensuring consistent and high-quality content. Your role will include placing syndicated programming into the automation system, creating daily automation timelines, and responding to emergency situations in person or remotely. Furthermore, you will generate station logs from the traffic system, enter underwriting contracts, write underwriting copy, and perform monthly billing functions. This comprehensive role requires a blend of on-air talent, technical skills, and administrative capabilities to ensure smooth and engaging programming for KWAX listeners. The ideal candidate must have a flexible schedule and reliable transportation to meet the demands of the position.

Minimum Requirements

• Three years of professional on-air experience in commercial or public radio, including using broadcast automation systems and operation of broadcasting production facilities and studio boards.

Professional Competencies

• Understanding of radio broadcasting and distribution systems.
• Ability to be flexible with schedule with reliable transportation.
• Ability to respond to emergency programming situations in person or remotely.
• Ability to communicate and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
• Commitment to and experience with promoting and enhancing diversity and equity.
• Experience operating basic computer software.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in broadcasting or related area.
• Working knowledge of underwriting regulations in public media.
• Experience with program production.
• Demonstrable understanding of classical music, composers, and pronunciations.
