Department Summary

The College of Arts and Sciences has nearly 50 departments and programs, spanning the Humanities, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences and comprises about two-thirds of all faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate majors on campus.

Advising is integral to the understanding of teaching and learning mission of the University of Oregon. The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) committed to providing personalized, timely, and accurate academic and career guidance that advances the college’s liberal arts mission by:
• Teaching students how to navigate university, college and department processes and access campus resources.
• Engaging with students in exploration of their interests, goals, and values in alignment with future endeavors.
• Supporting students in making timely progress on their chosen course of study including core education, major and/or minor, co-curricular activities, and experiential learning.

Tykeson College and Career Advising (TCCA) has a coordinated approach to advising that strives to be student-centered, caring, holistic, inclusive, and culturally aware. We offer year-round advising services, including peak registration times and summer orientation advising sessions, to ensure that the needs of our students are met. TCCA is located in Tykeson Hall and structured to align with CAS’ divisional groupings of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences. In addition, the College also houses pre-health advising support for students interested in health-related careers and programs.

Position Summary

Academic and Career Advisors provide major- and minor-specific academic advising services, and activities to assist students planning within a portfolio of majors under one of CAS’ divisional groupings (Social Sciences, Natural Sciences/Pre-Health, and Humanities). Advisors collaborate with students to help them achieve their personal goals, academic potential, and professional success. This position monitors degree progress and meets with students both in person (pre-scheduled appointments and drop-in) and remote modalities. Advisors use tools and resources to gain knowledge of UO majors, minors, academic programs and student engagement opportunities.

Advisors are focused on student success by providing support to students in various stages of their academic journey. This position assists students in developing academic plans that reflect their values, interest and goals. These plans provide support and referrals for students to engage with and explore UO resources that include courses, self-assessment(s), departmental/faculty mentorship, and career readiness events or activities.

Advisors must be able to work with and understand the needs of first-generation, low income, underrepresented, international, and transfer students. They must be skilled in addressing the needs of re-entry students, students in crisis, and students experiencing scholastic difficulty.

Advisors must work collaboratively and foster a welcoming, inclusive, accessible, and professional atmosphere in the office. This person must exhibit cultural humility and agility, with the ability and commitment to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree.
• One years’ experience providing academic or career advising, or student service program coordination in an educational setting.

Professional Competencies

• A broad knowledge of student development principles applicable to best practices within academic advising.
• Demonstrated understanding of issues facing diverse groups (e.g. low-socioeconomic, first-generation, underrepresented students of color, non-traditional, and under-prepared individuals).
• Demonstrated strong communication skills.
• Demonstrated high-level organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and multi-task effectively in a fast-paced, detail-oriented, and time-sensitive environment.
• Diligently attends to details and pursues quality in accomplishing tasks.
• Recognizes situations that warrant initiative, follow-up until resolution and/or when a student concern should be escalated to other staff, support office or campus entity.
• Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office Suite (or similar).
• Ability to produce professional correspondence, documents, track and summarize data related to course access, student progression and trends/needs of students.
• Ability to create and present to variety of audiences including students, colleagues and prospective visitors and their families.
• Demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external constituencies and build relationships.
• Ability to provide timely and punctual updates with critical information that impacts advising and student access to courses or services.
• Knowledge of university policies and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

• A master's degree in higher ed administration, student services/student affairs, higher education leadership, counseling, social work, or related field.
• Knowledge of university systems and structures.
• Higher education/student services program coordination experience.
• Experience in student success initiatives addressing access and equity in higher education.
