Department Summary

The Department of Human Physiology is home to undergraduate and graduate students who desire strong training in human physiology and anatomy that will prepare them for careers in medicine, allied health professions, and biomedical research. The department is strongly committed to inclusive and evidence-based teaching practices. The department has strengths in cardiovascular, respiratory and muscle physiology, neuroscience/motor control, cell signaling and metabolism, and biomechanics. Human Physiology has strong partnerships with university athletics, the Bioengineering Department, the Phil and Penny Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact, the Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance, and is aligned with a new Provost’s initiative on Sport and Wellness.

Located about 110 miles south of Portland, the University of Oregon is an AAU research institution with an enrollment of approximately 24,000. The Eugene metro area population (250,000) is in a region noted for its high quality of life and progressive cultural environment. We are approximately a one-hour drive from the Pacific Coast and the Cascade Mountains.

Position Summary

The Department of Human Physiology at the University of Oregon is seeking an innovative career teaching faculty to join a growing nationally-recognized program that provides flexible curriculum and an engaging learning environment for over 1,000 undergraduate majors who aspire to be professionals in health science fields such as medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, education, and research.

The successful candidate will engage in departmental and university service, work effectively with faculty, staff, and students with diverse backgrounds, participate in student advising, and to be a leader in evidence-based pedagogy for the Department of Human Physiology. Specific teaching needs include undergraduate instruction in upper-level courses in Human Anatomy, Physiology, Motor Control, and Biomechanics. The faculty member will have a teaching load of six courses per academic year which will include a combination of some upper-level courses and lower-level courses such as Research Methods and Medical Terminology or develop physiology-based courses for General Science credits (https://cas.uoregon.edu/physiology/courses). 

While this is not a tenure track position, it is expected to be an ongoing career position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor, depending on experience.

Minimum Requirements

Assistant Teaching Professor:
• Master’s degree in Human Physiology or a related field.
• Demonstrated teaching experience in the fields related to this position (e.g. teaching college level courses, creating and delivering training programs, mentoring undergraduate or graduate student theses, guest lectures, or other related instructional experience).

To be considered for the rank of Associate Teaching Professor, candidates must meet all the requirements of Assistant rank plus:
• Six years of instructional experience in higher education post-receipt of a master’s degree.
• Evidence of high-quality teaching and professional expertise in the field as related to the position.

Professional Competencies

• Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds and potential to contribute positively to our community.
• Demonstrated ability for effective teaching practices and learning strategies at the college and university level.
• Active engagement with developments in teaching pedagogy.
• Understanding, and commitment to, advancing equity, inclusion, and accessibility in undergraduate education.

Preferred Qualifications

• PhD in Human Physiology, or a related field. 
• Background in systems physiology, including nerve, muscle, cardiovascular, respiratory, metabolic and/or exercise physiology. 
• Associate Level – Significant experience engaging in professional development around the scholarship of teaching and learning.
