Department Summary

University Communications drives the University of Oregon’s strategic goals through the development and implementation of comprehensive communications and marketing programs. The division manages media relations, digital communications, social media, creative design, writing, editing, strategic communications, licensing, and marketing strategy. It collaborates with departments across campus to tell the UO’s key stories, enhance its reputation, and support initiatives that showcase academic and research excellence while promoting student success.

Position Summary

The Communications Coordinator supports the University Communications internal engagement efforts by maintaining a network of unit-level communicators across the university. Reporting to the Director of Communications Partners and Internal Engagement, the Coordinator serves as the liaison between University Communications and schools, colleges, and administrative units, connecting unit communicators with resources, story opportunities, and the tools they need to inform and engage their local audiences. The Coordinator also supports the day-to-day production of large-scale internal communications projects that require cross-unit collaboration.

Minimum Requirements

• Three years experience in gathering information, writing/producing materials, presenting information to the public and public relations. One year of this experience must have included responsibility for press releases and interaction with the news media.
• Bachelor's degree in journalism, communication or closely related field may substitute for up to two years of the general experience.

Professional Competencies

• Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to build and maintain relationships with individuals and teams from diverse backgrounds.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent projects, meet deadlines, and adapt quickly as priorities shift.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain processes and provide guidance clearly.
• Familiarity with digital communications tools, project management platforms, and content management systems.
• Experience with, and commitment to, demonstrating and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion principles.
• Ability to work independently and take initiative while contributing to a collaborative team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in a university or higher education communications environment.
• Experience facilitating or supporting a professional network, working group, or community of practice.
• Familiarity with AP style and university-level style guides.
• Experience using web-based project management systems (e.g., Wrike, Asana).
• Knowledge of email marketing or newsletter platforms.
