Department Summary

The School of Architecture & Environment is part of the College of Design at the University of Oregon, an Association of American Universities member and tier-one research institution in the Pacific Northwest that is ranked “highest research activity” by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The School of Architecture & Environment offers doctoral degree programs in architecture and landscape architecture, graduate degrees in historic preservation, fully accredited graduate and undergraduate professional degrees in architecture, interior architecture, and landscape architecture, and concurrent graduate degree programs.

The School of Architecture & Environment main campus and the architecture, landscape architecture, and interior architecture departments are in Eugene, Oregon. The Department of Architecture Portland Program is located in Portland, Oregon. Both Portland and Eugene are socially-progressive, bike-friendly, and family-friendly cities with ambitious goals for carbon emissions reduction and for community well-being. The University of Oregon has an active Native American Student Union centered at the Many Nations Longhouse. The UO has new Black Studies, Latinx Studies, and Disability Studies minors, a new Black Cultural Center, and an emerging research and policy center on racial disparities and resilience. Position Summary

The University of Oregon in Eugene and Portland, Oregon invites applications for Visiting Faculty Fellowships in Design for Spatial Justice at the rank of assistant, associate, or full professor or professor of practice in the areas of architecture, landscape architecture, and interior architecture in the School of Architecture & Environment in the College of Design. The School of Architecture & Environment will award up to three faculty fellowships in design/research informed teaching for durations of one to two years, Each fellow will be expected to teach two courses per quarter (six courses per year) and contribute to scholarship, service, and public programming.

The School of Architecture & Environment at the University of Oregon acknowledges that professional schools of design and design pedagogy in North America have historically disproportionately excluded cultural perspectives outside of European and colonial traditions. The School of Architecture & Environment seeks to participate in remedying these exclusions by recruiting visiting faculty who will use teaching to expand their understanding of environmental, social, and spatial justice in design, who will engage communities within and outside of the institution in their research and teaching, and whose scholarship is enriched by their lived experience.

We particularly encourage applications from candidates who are interested in teaching on questions in spatial justice at the intersections of gender, race, ethnicity, indigenousness, sexuality, and economic inequality and who are interested in teaching innovation design/research methods with a focus on architectural design studio. Studio methods might include but are not limited to traditional modes of scholarship, design, design research and creative practice; emerging technologies, design media, and fabrication; design and design/build; and community engagement, social practice, or critical spatial practice. Depending on interest and curricular need, design studios, subject area courses, and seminar courses could be in one or more of in any of the following areas: interior environments, accessibility, media, design processes, architectural technology, cultural heritage, and heritage conservation, inclusive urbanism, biocultural restoration, traditional ecological knowledge, feminist spatial practice, design computation, integrated design, ecological justice, climate change resilience, habitats/housing, human-centered design, urbanism and/or land use, and materials and methods.

Minimum Requirements

Visiting Assistant Professor:
• A terminal degree in a relevant discipline
• Previous teaching and/or practice

Visiting Associate Professor:
• A terminal degree in a relevant discipline plus six years of experience post-degree
• Previous teaching and/or practice

Visiting Professor:
• A terminal degree in a relevant discipline plus twelve years of experience post-degree
• Previous teaching and/or practice

Visiting Professor of Practice:
• A bachelor's degree
• Significant professional experience in a relevant field (level must be equivalent to that of a full professor - typically at least 12 years)

Professional Competencies

• Ability to communicate complex ideas effectively and facilitate student learning.
• Ability to communicate how issues of justice and equity impact theoretical approaches to relevant disciplines and professional practice.
• Ability to conduct independent, high-quality scholarship or creative practice.

Preferred Qualifications

• Terminal degree in Interior Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or Architecture.
• Excellent record of scholarly, creative, or other professional accomplishments in one of these fields.
