Department Summary

The Institute of Ecology and Evolution (IE²) facilitates research and graduate education in ecology and evolutionary biology. The institute fosters a collegial and stimulating intellectual environment for world-class research in molecular evolution, evolutionary genetics, evolution of development, and microbial, population, community, and ecosystems ecology.

Position Summary

The story of evolution is written in our genomes. Our lab group focuses on trying to make sense of genetic variation within and between species through the lens of evolution. We seek qualified applicants for a Software Developer/Research Scientist to join the collaborative lab group of Drs. Andrew Kern and Peter Ralph in the Institute of Ecology and Evolution at the University of Oregon.

We are looking for an experienced software developer who will work with us on a number of ongoing directions within the group including 1) the development of deep learning methods for population genomic inference, 2) method development and implementation for spatial population genetics, and 3) the development and implementation of population genetics methods that capitalize on recent, breakthrough representations of whole genome genealogies (i.e. tree sequences).

The candidate will be expected to participate and interact with scientists within the group, publish their work in peer-reviewed journals, and to share their code openly.

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in field related to research program.
• Five years of experience with python development, including experience with a compiled language such as C, and a working familiarity with modern Open Source Software development platforms (e.g., Github).

Professional Competencies

• Ability to work collaboratively with other members of the group as well as with external teams.
• Ability to develop ideas independently.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with high performance computing.
• Experience with machine learning / deep learning.
• Experience with computational statistics or other mathematical modeling.
• Unix administration experience.
