Department Summary

The School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) is an accredited research and professional school serving approximately 2,500 undergraduates and 100 graduate students both on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene and at the George S. Turnbull Center in Portland.

Degrees offered are the BA, BS, MA, MS, and Ph.D., as well as minors in Media Studies, Science Communication, and Game Studies. Undergraduate majors include Advertising, Journalism, Media Studies, and Public Relations. The school contributes courses to the interdisciplinary major in Cinema Studies and International Studies, and interdisciplinary minors in Art & Technology and Native American and Indigenous Studies.

The SOJC employs approximately 130 individuals as faculty and staff, over 50 graduate employees as well as over 50 student employees. The School is the second oldest journalism program in the nation, founded in 1916, and the only accredited journalism school in Oregon.

Position Summary

The University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) seeks a visionary leader at the Professor of Practice rank to join us as the Faculty Lead for Sports Journalism. This role is critical to fostering a dynamic and inclusive community for students passionate about sports journalism. In this position, you will serve as a catalyst for bringing together individuals with a shared interest in sports reporting, facilitating connections, and nurturing a vibrant culture within the academic setting.

As a Visiting Professor of Practice in Sports Journalism, in addition to delivering four (4) courses per year, you will inspire and guide students in their pursuit of excellence in sports journalism, providing mentorship, resources, and opportunities for growth. By organizing activities in collaboration with other faculty leaders in SOJC, you will create a platform for students to engage with industry professionals, develop their skills, and expand their knowledge base. Through your leadership, you will cultivate a sense of belonging and collaboration among students, empowering them to thrive academically and professionally in the field of sports journalism.

Minimum Requirements

• A bachelor’s degree.
• Significant professional experience in a relevant field (level must be equivalent to that of a full professor — typically at least 12 years).

Professional Competencies

• Ability to lead and inspire students in a university setting, with a track record of fostering a culture of creativity, collaboration, and community engagement.
• Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
• Experience teaching in a classroom setting, creating and delivering training programs, or other related experience in instruction.
• Familiarity with experiential learning methods and opportunities.
• A commitment to mentoring student projects and master’s projects is advantageous.

Preferred Qualifications

• Teaching experience at the university level.
• A record of excellence in establishing and maintaining partnerships with professionals in the field.
• Experience in sports journalism, including work in backcountry sports and outdoors journalism.
• Experience in developing innovative media products, such as digital or print publications with a strong emphasis on visual design and multimedia storytelling.
• Substantial professional experience in sports journalism.
