Department Summary

Position Summary

The Cleanroom Engineer will lead the daily technical operation, maintenance of equipment, and training of the users of the clean room in the Knight Campus. The engineer will work with the Knight Campus leadership, and internal and external user groups to establish operating protocols, and collaborate with faculty, staff, students, and outside users to maximize high-impact research output.

Responsibilities include internal and external business development to drive facility use, oversight of users and/or technical staff, safety, user training in tool use and process development, equipment maintenance, tool acquisition and installation, and all aspects of activities performed within the facility. The Engineer works closely with facilities users, campus safety personnel, Information Services support, outside vendors and contractors, and internal administrative personnel (faculty, administrative staff, president’s office) to control costs, provide accurate billing and maintain a safe and highly efficient laboratory serving the needs of the university and external facility clients.

Minimum Requirements

Research Assistant/Research Engineer Ranks:
• B.S. in physical sciences or engineering
• Three years of experience in a research environment with cleanroom operation and tool maintenance. Experience working with environmental health and safety rules in a research laboratory or shared equipment facility environment
• Five years of relevant progressive professional experience.

Research Associate Rank:
• Terminal degree in physical sciences or engineering
• Three years of experience in a research environment with cleanroom operation and tool maintenance. Experience working with environmental health and safety rules in a research laboratory or shared equipment facility environment
• Five years of relevant progressive professional experience.

Professional Competencies

• Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
• Commitment to promoting an inclusive work environment.
• Commitment to promoting a rigorous lab safety culture.
• Proficiency with software and technology, including technical knowledge and hands-on ability in the operation of relevant clean room tools such as but not limited to: photolithography; photomask design & writing; process chemistry; micro- & nano-fabrication; thin film deposition, including thermal, e-beam, and sputter deposition as well as CVD, PECVD and ALD; dry etch; and metrology.

Preferred Qualifications

• Professional experience managing or providing substantial technical leadership in a clean room or comparable research facility.
• Professional experience with installation and maintenance of major equipment.
• Two years of project management and/or finance skills, including experience in managing budgets.
• Professional experience in implementing and managing complicated safety regulations and protocols.
• Professional experience with financial and administrative policies, rules, and procedures.
