Department Summary

The Center for the Prevention of Abuse and Neglect (CPAN) is a College of Education research and outreach unit. CPAN collaborates with Oregon communities, youth, families, and traditionally excluded persons to prevent violence and promote healing, belonging, and child and youth wellbeing. Our research, evaluation, and programming efforts prioritize youth and survivor leadership, individual action-taking, social justice advocacy, and systems-level change. CPAN prioritizes community-based strategies, including development and implementation of Lane County’s demonstration site, The 90by30 Initiative.

We believe that harm in childhood is preventable with broad, community-based strategies that emphasize public health, human rights, social justice, and individual and collective action. We value active participation in continuous prevention and anti-oppression education efforts, investment in personal growth and development, and participatory learning. CPAN staff and volunteers are expected to demonstrate commitment to these values as expressed in our Values Statement.

CPAN Values Statement
Child abuse prevention and childhood wellbeing promotion must center anti-oppression to be effective. We prioritize diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and youth and survivor insights toward eliminating abuse, violence, and the racial disparities that exist in Oregon and in Lane County, the traditional, indigenous homeland of the Kalapuya people. This work is essential to building communities where every Oregon child and youth experiences safety, belonging and connection, where families have the support and resources they need, and community members routinely act to advance this vision.
