Position Summary
The Bioengineering Instructional Lab Manager is a subject-matter expert responsible for the technical operation, safety, and instructional support of the Department of Bioengineering's teaching laboratories and related spaces, enabling high-quality undergraduate and graduate education. The position supports instructional activities spanning biomaterials, tissue engineering, biomedical devices, biofabrication, advanced manufacturing, and related areas of bioengineering. The Bioengineering Instructional Lab Manager supports the Department of Bioengineering's educational mission by managing activities related to the physical preparation of all teaching laboratory courses and course-related projects offered by the department.
Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in bioengineering or related field
• Demonstrated experience working in laboratory environments relevant to bioengineering, biology, chemistry, materials science, biomedical engineering, or related fields.
Professional Competencies
• Familiarity with inventorying equipment, chemicals, and keeping equipment maintenance and inspection logs, including advanced skills in organizing, distributing, and accounting for inventory, especially in dynamic environments with multiple classes, programs, and instructor needs
• Familiarity with higher education organizations and typical college-level organizational structures
• Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills and a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbally with diverse populations
• Demonstrates knowledge of laboratory safety regulations and compliance, environmental hazards, safety audits, risk assessments, accident investigations, and emergency action plans.
• Familiarity with equipment and instrument maintenance, repairs, and replacement
• Proficiency with basic computer software such as Microsoft platforms and Excel
• Familiarity with Apple and Windows operating systems
• Theoretical and working knowledge balances, pH meters, spectrophotometers, imaging equipment, cell culture equipment, bioreactors, materials characterization instrumentation, 3D printers, bioprinters, microfabrication tools, and related laboratory instrumentation.
• Ability to learn new skills quickly and adapt well to changes
• Adaptability to assess situations independently and determine what steps are required to address needs and emerging situations
Preferred Qualifications
• MS or PhD in Bioengineering
• 1+ year of instructional laboratory management
• Experience supporting instructional or research activities involving biomaterials, cell culture, tissue engineering, biomedical devices, biofabrication, or related bioengineering areas.
