The museum is a center of interdisciplinary research and education, serving the State of Oregon, the University of Oregon, Native American Tribes, the research community, K-12 students and teachers, and the wider public in Oregon and beyond.

An established major engine of archaeological research in the American West, the museum’s Archaeological Research Division works across the state on dozens of archaeological projects each year. The MNCH is also the State of Oregon’s official repository for publicly owned collections and is home to hundreds of thousands of ethnographic and archaeological objects, fossils, and biological specimens from Oregon and around the world.

The museum annually welcomes more than 30,000 visitors and serves another 20,0000 Oregonians through its statewide educational programs. A winner of the 2018 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the museum is fully accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, distinguishing it as one of the very best museums in the nation.

The Museum employs a staff of approximately 40 faculty, researchers, classified, administrative, and student employees across several facilities on the University of Oregon, Eugene campus. Annual expenditures are about $3 million, from dozens of funding sources and allocated among a variety of projects across four museum divisions.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Education Manager, the Education Coordinator is a member of the education team in the public programs division at the museum. The MNCH education team facilitates engaging experiences for all museum audiences that highlight the museum’s unique role as a center of learning and research and to inspire curiosity about the past and responsibility for the future of natural and cultural resources of Oregon, the Pacific Northwest, and the broader world. The purpose of the education coordinator position is to implement and evaluate educational programs at the museum and offsite throughout the State of Oregon for K-12 students and teachers; community members of all ages; and UO students, faculty, and staff.

This position coordinates the engagement of community groups who utilize the museum as an educational resource; facilitates the museum’s youth and family program offerings; and provides support for other educational programs or visitor experience needs. This position participates in the delivery of educational programs at the museum and offsite, both locally and statewide, requiring occasional evening and/or weekend work and some overnight statewide travel. In addition, this position trains and supervises the MNCH volunteers and UO students who deliver programs. The Education Coordinator works closely with the Education Manager to set team goals, program content, interpretation practices, and plan of work. This position communicates with K-12 teachers and other community organizations to schedule visits to the museum; and communicates with UO departments such as Risk Management, parents of youth museum participants, partnering organizations, and all types of museum members and visitors.

Minimum Requirements

• Associate's Degree and three years of work experience (paid or volunteer) supporting community programs that serve children, youth or adults OR
• Bachelor's Degree and one year of work experience (paid or volunteer) one year of which must be working in youth development programs, adult education, teaching, program delivery or related functions OR
• Five years experience in a field related to the duties of the position AND a high school diploma or equivalent.

• Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated skill to work with diverse audiences.
• Demonstrated skill to use computers for word processing, data management, and communications.

Preferred Qualifications

• Two years of experience teaching students in grades PreK-6 in formal and/or informal settings.
• A bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the position, e.g. museum studies, education, Indigenous/Native American studies, environmental studies, anthropology, history, geology, etc.
• Knowledge of the Next Generation Science Standards, Oregon’s K-12 social science standards, and Oregon’s Senate Bill 13 Tribal History/Shared History curriculum.
• Working knowledge of best practices in teaching and classroom management.
