About Data, Access, Research, & Teaching Services
Data, Access, Research, & Teaching Services (DARTS) is responsible for an array of services and programs to meet the research, teaching, and learning needs of the University of Oregon community. DARTS encompasses four major areas: Teaching & Liaison Services and Branch Operations, Access Services, Research & Learning Spaces, and the Department of Open Research (DOOR). Services provided include the circulation of collections, collection development and maintenance, information literacy instruction, data services, digital publishing, and public scholarship support. The division also oversees Branch Operations for five library facilities: the Design Library, the NE Portland Library and Learning Commons, the Price Science Commons & Research Library (PSC), the Mathematics Library, and the Loyd and Dorothy Rippey Library at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology). The mission of DARTS is to enhance student success, faculty research, and teaching by facilitating access to information resources and specialized research spaces, building collections, providing innovative engagement activities, delivering information, data, and digital literacy teaching and consultation, implementing programs that support the adoption of Open Educational Resources (OER) and provision of affordable course materials.
About Research & Learning Space Programs
This new unit was established in September 2023, as part of the University Libraries Strategic Planning Process and 5-year Strategic Plan. The unit is tasked with continuously assessing existing research and learning spaces within all Libraries locations, evaluating emerging instructional technology needs across these Libraries locations, staffing and providing technical and customer support within those boutique technology-rich environments. Library research & learning spaces currently include the DeArmond Makerspace, Visualization Lab, Video Gaming Lab, Reality Augmentation and Virtual Experience (RAVE) Lab, and Active-Learning Classrooms in the Price Science Commons and Research Library, as well as the DREAM Lab, Douglass Room (music and audio recording lab), and several internally controlled Active-Learning Classrooms in Knight Library. This unit identifies, proposes, advises on, and helps implement, staff, and support new research and learning spaces and technologies across multiple Libraries locations.
Position Summary
This position is responsible for providing instructional technology support in the Libraries Research and Learning spaces, including the DREAM Lab, Douglass Audio Room, DeArmond Makerspace, PSC Visualization Lab, RAVE Lab, and Gaming Center. The individual in this role, in collaboration with the unit Manager and relevant liaison librarians, trains and assigns work of student assistants within the unit and provides support for technology resources, including both general technology resources within the library and specifically supporting student, staff, and faculty in the DREAM Lab, Douglass Audio Room, DeArmond Makerspace, Visualization Lab, RAVE Lab, Gaming Center, and PSC Active-Learning Classrooms. The person in this position must have an in-depth knowledge of the unit’s workflow, assist with provision of basic reference services in the absence of the music librarian, and explain, library policies to the public. The person in this position designs and delivers instructional workshops and equipment training across service points in Libraries Research & Learning Spaces and explains and interprets library policies for the public.
Minimum Requirements
• High School Diploma or equivalent and at least two years of relevant experience (paid or volunteer), supporting community programs that serve children, youth, or adults OR
• Associate degree and one year of work experience (paid or volunteer) which must be working in youth development programs, adult education, teaching, program delivery or related functions.
AND
• Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated skill to work with diverse audiences.
• Demonstrated skill to use computers for word processing, data management, and communications.
Professional Competencies
• Proficiency in supporting technology-rich services or learning spaces (i.e., makerspace, media lab, audio lab, augmented reality, gaming lab).
• Ability to devise and lead projects and complete tasks that require precision and attention to detail.
• Exceptional reliability in managing both high-volume and overlapping smaller tasks.
• Ability to consistently provide and model professional and user-focused customer service.
• Ability to remain flexible and adapt to rapid change and ambiguity within a dynamic organization.
• Proficiency with or ability to quickly acquire proficiency with the hardware and software used for the Libraries Research & Learning Spaces.
• Highly competent at and willing to acquire additional technological and customer service skills.
• Engage with users for feedback that can shape organizational directions.
• Ability to work within and foster a diverse work environment.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in a Makerspace, media lab, or audio lab environment.
• Experience creating user guides for equipment, particularly for those unfamiliar with the equipment.
• Experience in a training environment with a diverse group of patrons.
• Experience assigning and reviewing work of student employees.
