Department Summary

Since its inception in 1977, the Labor Education and Research Center at the University of Oregon has made the resources and expertise of the higher education system available to workers, unions, policymakers, and community partners throughout Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. LERC’s faculty provide training and technical assistance to legislators, community activists, and governmental agencies at the state, local, and federal levels and frequently furnish background information on labor and employment issues to the news media. They also actively participate in professional associations related to labor education and their particular academic disciplines.

With offices at the UO main campus and the UO Portland, the Center’s instructional faculty deliver over 50 non-credit workshops, seminars, and conferences to adult learners each year. With the help of research faculty and graduate students, LERC maintains an active research agenda and produces public reports on their findings.

Support staff include the Fiscal Coordinator and the Education Program Manager, both based in Eugene.

Position Summary

As the on-site staff person coordinating services and operational activities, this position plays an important role in the smooth and efficient operation of LERC’s Portland office. While this position serves as a primary contact with other departments and UO administration in Portland concerning office operations, an important and large part of the position is coordination with outside constituent organizations and agencies, vendors and venues. Major responsibilities include: planning and executing large public-facing trainings and conferences; collaboration with departmental colleagues and external stakeholders; record-keeping; representing LERC in its outreach and social media presence; and website maintenance and design. This position works independently and as part of project teams, requiring strong project management and interpersonal skills. They report to LERC’s Co-Director at the UO Eugene campus.

Minimum Requirements

• Two years of experience as an administrative specialist or executive support specialist which included administrative support for a project, program, or operation. Administrative support includes those duties beyond clerical/secretarial such as: interpretation of laws, rules, and regulations; administrative data collection and analysis; and evaluation of projects, processes, and operations; OR
• An equivalent combination of training and experience.

One year of postsecondary education may be substituted for up to one year of the experience.

Professional Competencies

• Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment and participate effectively in work-teams.
• Ability to effectively and diplomatically communicate with a wide range of people (faculty, staff, outside collaborators, vendors, and program attendees).
• Demonstrated high-level organizational skills, and ability to manage projects and timelines.
• Advanced computer application skills in word processing, design, and data management.

Preferred Qualifications

• Highly Proficient with FileMaker Pro or similar relational database for data entry, creating and interpreting reports, and basic troubleshooting.
• Interest in labor, digital strategies, and social media.
• Highly proficient in the use of Qualtrics for creating forms and surveys.
• Marketing and/or promotional experience for conferences, events, or educational programs
• Experience creating flyers and promotional materials using Word and Adobe Suite.
