Position Announcement

The Architecture Department at the University of Oregon (UO) is seeking applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor position in Architectural Design, Structures, and Mass Timber to start September 2025 in Eugene, Oregon. As the successful candidate, you will have experience or show evidence of capacity to effectively teach structures for architecture students and lead research in mass timber structures. You will have the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge advances in sustainable materials, construction, and technology to produce eco-friendly, net zero, and low-impact buildings. You will develop a well-defined research and/or creative practice agenda using innovative technologies. You will have the opportunity to engage with award-winning research initiatives including the Tallwood Design Institute, a University of Oregon and Oregon State University partnership advancing mass timber in the built environment. Additionally, you will teach core structures courses, architectural design studios, and elective seminar courses related to your research area, as well as contribute service to the profession and school/university at large. Department or Program Summary

The Department of Architecture has been recognized as a leader in the field of sustainable design research and practice, offering B.Arch., M.Arch., M.S. degrees and a Ph.D. in Sustainable Design. Minimum Requirements

• A master’s in architecture (M.Arch) OR a professional degree in architecture (B.Arch, or comparable professional degree) AND a graduate degree in architecture, engineering, or another allied field (M.S., M.A., or other relative graduate degree).
• Capacity to develop a successful record of publication of research and/or creative/professional work. Evidence may include peer-reviewed publications, design awards, citations, or published reviews of design work, or grant funding.
• Capacity to teach structural design courses, architectural design studios, and courses in a research specialty. Relevant evidence may include conference presentations, in-house instruction, design charrettes, public engagement, policy advocacy, or research dissemination.

Preferred Qualifications

• Academic and professional experience in mass timber design and construction, holding an architectural license.  
• A degree in structural engineering, civil engineering, or related field
• A path to professional licensure and/or a PhD degree in architecture or related field.
• Experience in professional architecture or engineering firm(s) or involvement in design/build projects.
• Expertise in building materials, construction systems, net-zero design, sustainable design, life cycle assessments, or re-use and re-cycling
• Computational design and analysis expertise
• Demonstrated ability to support and enhance diverse learning and working environments
• Evidence of successful interdisciplinary collaboration such as joint design projects, co-authored research papers, or teaching with colleagues from other specialties.
• Project management in research or practice
