Department Summary
The Division of Undergraduate Education and Student Success (UESS) promotes academic excellence, universal access, engagement, and achievement for the student scholar. UESS programs focus on the educational trajectory of the student by providing opportunities and services essential for progress toward scholastic objectives and intellectual development. UESS departments and programs serve the entire population of UO undergraduate students and partner closely with other campus units to support student success and engagement.
At the Tutoring and Academic Engagement Center (TAEC) students find resources and services to enhance their learning and academic performance through tutoring, classes, individual learning consultations, peer academic coaching and supplemental instruction. These resources are instrumental in helping students fill in critical subject and skill gaps, strengthen their academic performance, and help them make solid progress toward achieving their educational goals.
Position Summary
Learning Specialists in TAEC play a critical role in enhancing the academic success of university students by providing individual academic coaching and limited advising designed to help students improve their learning, enhance their academic success, and navigate and overcome barriers. Each Learning Specialist will assist in the coordination and growth of academic support programming designed to further meet student needs, narrowing resource gaps, and fostering a sense of belonging and flourishing. These programs may include: Class Encore (Supplemental Instruction) study groups, Math and/or Writing tutoring, and Peer Academic Coaching. To further this work, each Learning Specialist will also assist with CRLA-aligned peer educator training.
Learning Specialists are responsible for maintaining student contact records and reporting data on program use and effectiveness.
Learning Specialists must be culturally competent and able to work with first-generation, low-income, underrepresented, international, and transfer students. These positions requires skill in addressing the needs of all students, from high performing to academically vulnerable. The Learning Specialists must also demonstrate respect for all individuals, welcome diversity among students and colleagues, and actively work toward an inclusive workplace.
Minimum Requirements
• Advanced degree OR
• Bachelor’s degree AND three years of experience in academic coaching, teaching, advising, counseling, or related fields.
Professional Competencies
• Excellent communication skills
• Knowledge of student learning and teaching theory and research, with awareness of evidence-based strategies including reading, writing, note-taking, studying and preparing, test-taking, time management, and goal setting.
• Knowledge of and experience working and interacting effectively with diverse groups of staff, faculty, and student populations.
• Ability to anticipate next steps and execute independently.
• Ability to work individually and collaboratively in a team setting.
• Ability to establish priorities, maintain schedules, and manage time effectively.
• Knowledge of university policies, procedures, systems, and structures.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience providing academic support and strategies to enhance student learning in higher education.
• Experience coordinating events, programs, or services.
