Department Summary

The Department of Economics at the University of Oregon, part of the Social Sciences division of the College of Arts and Sciences, is a highly accomplished community of teachers and scholars. Economics is a comprehensive social science discipline that teaches students to critically analyze the world around them, applying economics theories and mathematical approaches to almost any societal question. The UO Economics major is STEM designated.

The Department of Economics offers a BA/BS at the undergraduate level as well as an Accelerated Masters Program. We also offer graduate programs leading to Master’s and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees. In our Master's program, award-winning faculty prepare students for consulting, applied research, policy analysis and data science careers in private industry and government. The program also offers outstanding preparation for students interested in pursuing a PhD. A PhD in economics prepares students to teach at liberal arts and research universities; to work in state, federal, and international organizations; and to conduct research or work as a consultant for private industry. Our program, with its low student/faculty ratio, is structured to develop high-quality research and teaching skills as well as facilitate successful and timely completion of the degree.
