Department Summary

The Division of Student Life supports the university’s academic mission and strategic plan through comprehensive programs and services that promote and advance student learning and success while fostering an inclusive and vibrant campus community. Student Life includes four major portfolios, the Office of the Dean of Students, Experiential Learning & Engagement, Health & Wellbeing, and Division Administration. Key programs and departments within the division include but are not limited to University Health Services, Erb Memorial Union, Physical Education & Recreation, Parent and Family Programs, Major Student Events (Commencement, Homecoming, University Day), Fraternity and Sorority Life, Counseling, Health Promotion, Multicultural and Identity Based Support Services, Student Government Engagement & Success, Student Conduct and Community Standards, and Support for Students in Crisis and Students of Concern.

Student Government Engagement and Success (SGES) coordinates the operations, support and continuity for the university’s student government, the Associated Students of the University of Oregon (ASUO), and for student leaders within ASUO-Recognized Student Organizations. The ASUO serves as the primary entry point for student leadership and campus and community engagement. ASUO’s Legislative and Executive Branches are responsible for recognizing and serving over 230 student organizations, whose members interact with ASUO officials, SGES staff, university departments, and student government and university policy on a regular basis. In addition, ASUO officials recommend the allocation of approximately $11 million in mandatory Student Incidental Fees through an annual budget process that requires the approval of the University President and Board of Trustees, requiring departmental oversight of significant financial, risk, and policy compliance obligations. Given this scope and complexity, this position works collaboratively across academic and student life units to align engagement and experiential learning initiatives with the university’s strategic plan and the vision of the Experiential Learning and Engagement portfolio within the Division of Student Life, for enhancing student success and flourishing.

Position Summary

The Assistant Director of SGES serves as the department's primary resource for risk, financial, and policy compliance related to student government and the more than 230 student organizations recognized by ASUO, while providing leadership for staff supervision, student leader advising, and continuous improvement of departmental services. Reporting to the Director of SGES, this position ensures that ASUO and ASUO-recognized student organizations operate in compliance with university, state, and federal regulations; contributes to decisions affecting departmental programs and services; and assumes the Director's responsibilities when needed.

A central function of this role is compliance oversight: interpreting and enforcing policy for student leaders, managing risk and event safety standards, overseeing records retention, and advising on the annual Incidental Fee allocation process (~$11M). The Assistant Director also supervises the Financial Service Advisor and Senate Advisor, along with student employees, and provides day-to-day leadership, advising, and problem-solving support to elected ASUO officers and student organization leaders. In addition, the role designs assessment and communication strategies, tracks student organization participation trends to inform divisional policy, and partners with campus stakeholders to strengthen service models and the overall student experience.

Success in this role requires strong judgment in interpreting policy and managing risk, excellent communication and relationship-building skills, the ability to evaluate programs and use data to inform decisions, and a commitment to working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds. The Assistant Director must balance multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining consistent, sound decision-making on behalf of students, staff, and the broader campus community.

• One year of experience with budget management, financial tracking, or fiscal oversight in a professional or organizational setting.

Professional Competencies

• Understanding of student leadership development in higher education – including ability to provide day-to-day leadership, advice and support to students and employees in a student-centered, student development-focused manner.
• Sound judgement in interpreting policy and managing risk, with the ability to apply regulatory and compliance standards to complex or ambiguous situations.
• Ability to identify institutional risk and apply sound, policy-consistent judgment when responding to time-sensitive or high-stakes situations.
• Ability to measure and evaluate programs and services, using a variety of techniques.
• Excellent interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills.
• Strong analytical and planning skills, with the ability to prioritize, multi-task, and use outcome-based decision making to improve organizational performance.
• Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, in support of an inclusive and welcoming environment.
• Ability to facilitate training for students and staff.
