The School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC) is an accredited research and professional school serving approximately 2,500 undergraduates and 100 graduate students both on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene and at the George S. Turnbull Center in Portland. Degrees offered are the BA, BS, MA, MS and Ph.D., as well as a minor in Media Studies. The school contributes courses to the interdisciplinary major in Cinema Studies and International Studies, and interdisciplinary minors in Art & Technology and Native American Studies. The SOJC employs approximately 130 individuals as faculty and staff, over 50 graduate employees as well as over 50 student employees. The school is one of the oldest journalism programs in the nation, founded in 1916.
This position provides integrated career and academic advising for current and prospective undergraduate majors and minors in the School of Journalism and Communication (SOJC), within a team setting that comprises other professional advisors. It reports to the Director of Student Services but also receives training and additional project assignment and supervision from the Associate and Assistant Directors in the unit.
Administrative and programming duties may include coordinating with faculty directors/advisors on academic and career programming (e.g. Charles Snowden Program for Excellence in Journalism, SOJC Honors Program, etc.) and/or facilitating unit-initiated services and programs (e.g. workshops, social media, etc.).
As the school concentrates on maintaining and exceeding its high recruitment and retention rates, this position will support the unit’s leadership in both internal and campus-wide career and academic advising initiatives and recruiting events.
• Master’s degree in student services, counseling, or a related field.
• Six months of experience providing academic or career advising for students from diverse backgrounds in a college/university setting and facilitating student services programming.
• Bachelor’s degree AND two years of experience providing academic or career advising in college/university setting.
• Six additional months of experience advising students from a variety of backgrounds, with diverse academic interests and abilities and facilitating student services programming.
• Demonstrated knowledge of, and ability to address the needs of undergraduate students.
• Strong organizational, written, oral, interpersonal and communication skills.
• Strong customer-service orientation.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.
• Demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
• Ability to successfully complete a criminal background check.
• Master's degree.
• Advising experience in an integrated academic and career office in a college/university setting.
• Advising experience in a professional school/within an academic unit.
• Some experience in utilizing technology for advising purposes (e.g. podcasts, social media platforms, Linkedin).
• Demonstrated awareness of the CAS Standards that pertain to academic and/or career advising.
• Proficiency in a second language for use in outreach and retention programming.
