Department Summary
The Ballmer Institute for Children's Behavioral Health at the University of Oregon Portland establishes a new national model for behavioral healthcare for children and families by creating a first-of-its-kind undergraduate training program in child behavioral health.
The institute prioritizes the needs of youth who have been historically or persistently underserved and seeks to make real system change by:
• Creating a new mental health profession
• Delivering support in schools and the community
• Training existing youth-serving professionals
• Developing new approaches to support child behavioral health
• Transforming the Pacific Northwest into a national model of thought and action
The Ballmer Institute invests in community outreach and engagement by:
• Convening a community advisory board, comprised of key community leaders and stakeholders, that meets 6 times a year and provides critical feedback to the Ballmer Institute in three key areas: (a) community needs related to youth behavioral health, (b) feedback on our training model, and effective, culturally responsive practices that address community needs, and (c) recruiting and supporting the needs and professional development of students from diverse backgrounds.
• Developing meaningful and sustainable partnerships with community organizations to provide internship and external placement opportunities to Ballmer Institute students.
• Collaborating directly with community partners and stakeholders to have a positive community presence, building community capacity by sharing knowledge and resources, learning about culturally responsive practices being delivered in the community.
Position Summary
The limited duration community engagement coordinator (CEC) supports the Ballmer Institute’s community outreach and engagement efforts by collaborating with the Director of Community Engagement and other institute team members. This position uses independent judgment and initiative, utilizing comprehensive knowledge of the complex issues that accompany community engagement in a higher education environment. The CEC must possess a high level of cultural awareness, humility, and the ability to work effectively with diverse populations and positions.
Community engagement initiatives that the CEC will support include, but are not limited to:
• Executing community engagement and outreach efforts including identifying key stakeholders to engage with, opportunities for enhancing engagement, resource generation through grants and other funding mechanisms, and aligning resources to support activities such as information sessions, events, focus groups to enhance community outreach and engagement.
• Providing administrative support for the community advisory board, including coordinating meetings, soliciting community feedback, assisting with community outreach efforts, and addressing community needs and feedback.
• Representing the Ballmer Institute at standing meetings for community partners, community events, and campus meetings and councils aimed at community outreach and engagement.
• Tracking progress and preparing reports for community members, donors, and university leadership on the overall efforts, outcomes, and future plans related to community outreach and engagement.
Approximately 50% of the CEC’s time will be spent traveling to local community sites, partner meetings, or other locations within the region. Occasional after-work hours are anticipated to accommodate community events and activities.
The CEC is a limited duration classified project coordinator position. Limited duration appointments cannot exceed two years and can expire earlier upon the termination of the special study, project, or purposes of the role. Current funding is for one year which may be extended based on need.
Minimum Requirements
Associate's Degree and three years of work experience (paid or volunteer) supporting community programs that serve children, youth or adults OR
Bachelor's Degree and one year of work experience (paid or volunteer) one year of which must be working in youth development programs, adult education, teaching, program delivery or related functions OR
Five years experience in a field related to the duties of the position AND a high school diploma or equivalent.
AND
Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrated skill to work with diverse audiences.
Demonstrated skill to use computers for word processing, data management, and communications.
Professional Competencies
• Knowledge and experience with underrepresented populations (e.g. Native American, Black/African American, LatinX, Asian, Desi, Pacific Islander, LGBTQIA+) and have a deep understanding of the unique experiences and needs of these populations, particularly in the Pacific Northwest.
• Knowledge regarding the culture of colleges and universities as a shared governance environment.
• Ability to build, nurture and sustain relationships and key partnerships in low-trust environments.
• Ability to work on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion to effect meaningful change and promote community outreach and engagement
• Ability to actively identify and independently solve problems; escalating issues to ensure resolution when appropriate.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times including understanding of FERPA and other policies, procedures, or regulations that guide interactions with students and colleagues.
• Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects concurrently.
• Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
• Ability to work and communicate effectively with individuals and communities from diverse backgrounds.
• Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), with the ability and initiative to learn and incorporate new hardware/software platforms as required to successfully perform the essential functions of the position (e.g. Qualtrics, Constant Contact, MyTrack).
Preferred Qualifications
• Bilingual, Spanish preferred
• Experience supporting community advisory boards or other community bodies in low-trust environments.
• Educational background or professional experience in a behavioral health field
• Experience with large scale event planning, including venue selection, catering, technology, marketing and communications coordination, contracting, developing runs-of-show, and other logistics.
• Grant writing and report writing experience.
