The Knight Campus welcomes all applications and nominations for the founding co-director of CBDS at the UO. This leader will help shape a vision and operational approach for the center to develop and apply complex data science tools, techniques and research to advance the understanding of normal and aberrant cell biology. This will be accomplished by building upon the complementary strengths and expertise at UO and OHSU to tackle the biocomputational challenges needed to address central problems in cell biology, regenerative medicine, and cancer, and to create a uniquely interactive environment that supports the research activities of its faculty and staff as well as the training needs of its students.
The inaugural co-director will report to the UO Knight Campus executive director and will partner with the co-director appointed at the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute (KCI). The UO co-director will work closely with senior leadership across both universities. The co-director will be the academic and administrative leader of the center at the UO and will provide intellectual vision, strategic leadership, and financial management.
In collaboration with faculty across UO and OHSU, the co-director will develop, articulate, and advance the academic and scientific vision required to attract funding, talent and partners to the center. The co-director will work to coalesce the emerging strengths and priorities across both institutions in data sciences, fostering linkages across existing programs and laying groundwork for yet-unknown discoveries. The potential for creation and impact is enormous as the next director will have the opportunity to build, a well-resourced center capable of pushing science and education in new directions.
Department or Program Summary
The University of Oregon (UO) and Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) have established the Center for Biomedical Data Science (CBDS), a pioneering concept and innovative organization with immense potential. CBDS is dedicated to exploring normal and abnormal biological states at cell, tissue, organ, organism and population levels to greatly accelerate our ability to prevent and cure disease. A major philanthropic gift and commitments from both universities brought to life the vision for a world-class center that will realize greater impact by combining strengths of two eminent universities.
The Phil and Penny Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact (Knight Campus) is a bold new effort at the UO designed to accelerate the cycle of translating scientific discoveries into innovations that improve quality of life for people in Oregon, the nation, and beyond. Rooted in the University of Oregon’s 60-year history of interdisciplinary collaboration, the Knight Campus catalyzes new research opportunities, forges partnerships with industrial and clinical practitioners, and provides integrated experiential training for the next generation of citizen scientists and entrepreneurs. Initial faculty expertise is in areas such as regenerative medicine, human performance, biofunctional materials, medical devices and biosensors, neural engineering, protein engineering and synthetic biology.

• Doctorate in Data Science, Biomedicine, Bioengineering, Biology, Human Physiology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, or related discipline from an accredited institution of higher education.
• Demonstrated ability to mentor and support students from diverse backgrounds through examples of cross-cultural communication skills, successful experience with different teaching strategies with the goal addressing different learning contexts and/or an example of supporting or leading program or set of activities that promoted interest and retention in the sciences by individuals from under-represented groups.
• Teaching experience in courses relevant to biomedicine and data science curricula as relevant based on seniority.
• Successful record of external support for research program as relevant to seniority in the position.
• Successful record of peer-reviewed publications as relevant to seniority in the position.
• An internationally recognized track record of scientific achievement in biomedical data science as evidenced by an outstanding publication record and the appropriate external indicators;
• Ability to articulate a vision for innovative interdisciplinary science that aligns with the established mission and vision of the center and commitment to hire accordingly; the vision will include an emphasis on translational research in biomedicine, with the aim of making an impact on human health at the national level;
• A track record of visionary leadership, strategic thinking, and effective planning coupled with the demonstrated capacity to build consensus and provide the decisive leadership required to implement a strategic vision and build the operating platform to support it;
• A recognized academic leader with experience in scientific administration;
• Experience working in complex, multi-stakeholder environments and strong communication skills; the ability to build successfully at multiple interfaces (e.g. UO colleges, departments, centers and institutes; OHSU departments, programs, centers and institutes; other Oregon universities; and industry) and to integrate activities so that the center and its partners are mutually strengthened through collaborations;
• A demonstrated ability to recruit, retain, direct and develop first-rate faculty and scientists;
• An ability to bring together groups of faculty, scientists, staff and trainees to work together in a positive manner to productively carry out interdisciplinary collaborative science;
• A track record of mentoring and developing trainees and developing curricula;
• A commitment to diversity, inclusion and equity in the faculty and staff of the center; and
• Experience with large government agencies, foundations, industry, and philanthropy and a thorough understanding of funding opportunities and strategies to successfully attract support to ensure the financial success of the center.
